Hi, I have built a couple of Alvaroelas projects and must say they are absolutely great, Thanks!!

I have a question regarding the ROM cartridge and its usage. I built it to be able to run Thorn test software. That part works as expected but I wonder if its possible to run anything else than 16KB on IC2? Maybe I do something wrong but I cant get anything to run on chip 1 or more than 16KB on IC2.

I guess there's something about address decoding that I haven't properly understood, my ql is its 5 and another iss6.

TLDR: no, you can only have 16Kb in IC2.

As far as I understand, the socket on the left is for the "upgrade" 16Kb of ROM that the issue 1 need, because sinclair shipped the QL incomplete, while the socket on the right is for a "software extension" like the program test that Sinclair use in his factory, or the toolkit 2, ICE, and other software distributed on cartridge.

That is left map in the range 32Kb-48Kb, and right in the range 48kb-64kb of the memory.

In the socket there is no lines for reading or writing, so initially, it can only have 16kb (or less) of ROM.
more shall be posible using banks as has been demostrate with the cartridge of the ZX Spectrum IF 2, but mapping is not a thing that QL use.
Other QL product has found the way to write in the slot (using A13 as RD/WR, or using a latch and A0-17 as data, but I have not investigate any of this, QIMSI and other SD adapter use it.

Hasta donde yo entiendo, el zocalo de la izquierda era para la "actualizacion" de 16Kb que necesitaban los Issue 1, ya que Sinclair los saco de fabrica impletos, mientras que el zocalo en la derecha, es para software añadido, como los programas de test que sinclair usaba en fabrica para el control de calidad, el toolkit 2, ICE y otro software que se distribuia en cartucho.


Es decir se mapea el de la izquierda en el rango 32-48kb y el de la derecha en el rango 48-64Kb de la memoria del QL.

En el zocalo del Rom del QL no hay lineas para leer o escribir, asi que inicialmente solo se pueden tener 16kb (o menos) de ROM.
Mas seria posible usando paginacion, como otra gente a demostrado con el cartucho del IF2 del Spectrum, pero nunca se usa paginacion en el QL.
Otros productos del QL han encontrado la forma de ller o escribir en el slot (usando A14 como RD/WE, o usarndo latchs y A0-A7 como datos, pero no he investigado eso, QIMSI y otros adaptadores de SD usan eso.
